Rum & Onions is the name of a rehearsed contra-dance orchestra
that plays twice per year--once for an all-day Saturday dance in Princeton
on Halloween, and again in the following spring at
New England Folk
Festival (NEFFA) in Boston. Each performance features the band members
in costume. As well, the group plays for a weekly contra-dance on the
Wednesday before each big performance.
As with the pickup band, players of all skill level are welcome to play in R&O,
but they must attend most of the six weekend rehearsals. The band was started
over thirty years ago to foster contra-dance musical experience among
local players. Participating is also fun and a great way to get to know
the other musicians.
You can read about last year's rehearsal schedule
and contact the bandleader if interested in playing this year. Rehearsals
usually begin in early September.
